Understanding PA Redistricting with Congressman Brendan Boyle
As of February 19th, Pennsylvania has a new congressional district map issued by the PA Supreme Court. The new map seeks to add balance and fairness in lieu of the previous map (which was one of the most notoriously gerrymandered in favor of the GOP in the entire nation). This is good news. Now, Democrats may be able to gain additional congressional seats in Pennsylvania, which could help us take back the House in 2018.
While many Democrats are aware the new congressional map offers fresh opportunities to #TurnPABlue, many of us are wondering -- what exactly does it mean and what do we do now?
We've got you covered.
Join us for a conversation with Congressman Brendan Boyle, a Democrat who has represented PA's 13th district (which included portions of Northeast Philadelphia and Montgomery County under the old map) since 2015. He is currently a candidate for Pennsylvania's 2nd Congressional District (which now includes large portions of Philadelphia). In a moderated casual discussion, he'll break down the new districts and what it means for citizens just like you. Register here.
In this conversation, you'll learn:
- What you need to know about the new map and how it affects YOU
- How the new map impacts pivotal races across the state
- The implications and fallout from the PA Supreme Court decision
- What you can do from now until the general election to help turn PA blue in the context of this new map
Details at-a-glance:
WHAT: A conversation with Congressman Brendan Boyle about PA redistricting. Boyle will impart actionable insights citizens can use to inform their voting, organizing, and activism decisions. Attendees will leave feeling empowered to get more involved in local politics.
WHEN: Tuesday, 3/27/18, 7PM
WHERE: U-Bahn, 1320 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19107
WHY: Primaries are coming. In the wake of this redistricting decision, candidates have emerged from the chaos in a frenzied, Game-of-Thronesian grab for congressional and other government seats. As the smoke clears, and new and old faces alike enter a crowded contest to sit on the iron thrones in Washington (if Trump doesn't levy a tariff on iron, too), we'll need all the help we can get to understand the increasingly complex local political landscape and make informed decisions as we work to #TurnPABlue. We're grateful to Congressman Boyle for helping us to understand this song of maps and mayhem.
